Let’s Talk Metabolism

September 15, 2025

Metabolism. Every week, there is a new headline screaming about how to “fix” or “hack” your metabolism. We envy people who have “fast” metabolisms and bemoan when ours is not good enough.

But what is metabolism? And why does it matter?

Metabolism is your body’s engine—the sum of all the chemical reactions that turn food into energy. In everyday terms, it’s what keeps your heart pumping, your brain thinking clearly, and your muscles moving.

While buzzwords like “fast” or “slow” metabolism are thrown around, the truth is that our metabolism has a significant impact on our body and extends far beyond the latest diet trend aimed at getting thin.

In fact, those diet trends tend to harm our metabolism while reinforcing the lie that the only thing that matters about us is our size. But we can get to my soapbox later.

Your Metabolism is Like a Campfire

I like to use this metaphor with my clients: imagine your metabolism as a cozy campfire. When you feed it logs and kindling regularly, it burns brightly, providing warmth, light, and good vibes. But if you starve it—skipping meals or restricting too much—the fire smolders. It struggles to stay lit, leaving you feeling low in energy, foggy, and emotionally flat.

This is why eating at regular intervals is so important. Research indicates that skipping meals can lead to fatigue, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and a slower metabolism due to hormonal shifts such as spikes in cortisol and drops in blood sugar.

The Trouble with Dieting

Your body is remarkably intelligent and does its job exceptionally well: keeping you alive. Which we are all in favor of.

Yet, we have come to believe that our bodies are doing it wrong, particularly if those bodies have rudely decided not to conform to the latest body trend—the horror.

Side Quest: Your Health is More Than a Number

You are more than an ornament. Your health is more complex than a number on a scale. Body diversity is entirely normal and healthy. And it encompasses a whole lot more than our skin color; it also includes body shapes and sizes.

To keep this post from becoming a novel, like some of my other posts, I would like to refer you to other blogs of mine if you are interested.

For this post, I will end our side quest by pointing out that your body was not created to be shamed, augmented, or starved into submission. It was designed so you could get out there and do all the fantastic things you have been dreaming about.

When we stop fighting our bodies and live, the whole world is richer for it. We need you.

Now, Back to Our Conversation About Metabolism

Your body has evolved over millennia to keep you alive. As such, our bodies have learned how to fight disease, adapt to various climates, and survive famine.

Dieting is built on the premise of restriction, but you can’t outsmart your biology. As we restrict, our bodies know exactly what to do to keep us alive. They don’t know there is a McDonald’s on every corner. Your body can’t fathom why you would intentionally stop eating. How well can a fire keep burning if we stop putting logs on the fire?

So your body slows everything down. It sends out hormones to make you think about and obsess over food at the cost of thinking of other things. After all, if you are consumed by food thoughts, you are more likely to work harder to get food. Your body sees that as a big win.

Your body will work hard to ensure you do not lose weight, as that feels unsafe. And if you do, your body will work overtime to gain it back with a bit of insurance so that next time, you can stay farther from danger.

This is why research consistently shows that dieting strategies lead to long-term weight gain in up to 95% of participants.

Energy, Mood, and Mental Clarity Come From a Healthy Metabolism

When your internal campfire is healthy and well-fed, you feel it in your whole being. You have sustained focus, a steadier mood, and fewer energy crashes. Studies show that intuitive eating—listening to hunger and fullness cues—supports mental health, reducing stress, anxiety, and negative body image.

By contrast, under-fueling triggers a cascade of body responses: cortisol rises (hello, stress!), focus falters, and fatigue drags you through the day.

Most of us can identify feeling hangry. That is such a good term, as it illustrates the mood change we experience when we are too hungry.

What is fascinating is how many of my clients are surprised by how good they feel when they actually try to eat throughout the day. We are so conditioned to assume that we are overeating and must restrict our food intake at all costs.

Adding protein, fat, and carbs to a meal or snack together is even better, as our body finds that combination particularly satisfying.

Why Fueling Your Fire Works to Speed Up Your Metabolism

Regular meals and snacks help keep your metabolic fire burning. According to Cleveland Clinic metabolic guidance, skipping meals or eating too little can slow metabolism and impair cognitive function. Keeping the campfire stoked means adding that fuel before the embers die down—so you stay comfortable, alert, and resilient.

Protein and fat act like the logs in this analogy: they burn slowly and steadily. They’re the anchors that prevent the flames from flickering out. Carbohydrates serve as kindling—quick to ignite to provide fuel and support sustained energy when balanced well with the larger logs. This combination provides sustained energy, a stable mood, and improved mental health.

Trust Your Body’s Intelligence

Your body isn’t broken—it’s brilliantly evolved to handle uncertainty and scarcity. When we restrict food or skip meals, our metabolism adapts, conserving energy and signaling hunger. These are survival mechanisms—not dieting failures.

Intuitive eating shifts the narrative: you learn to trust your internal cues, eating when hungry and stopping when satisfied instead of following rigid “rules.” Research shows that this approach enhances psychological well-being, self-acceptance, and a healthier relationship with food.

Your body already knows what it needs—it just needs consistent fuel to keep the fire glowing.

Focus on Building Your Metabolism, Not “Hacking” It

Metabolism isn’t a thing to be “hacked”—it’s a living, dynamic system. When you listen to your body, eat at natural intervals, and prioritize balanced, whole foods—you’re not just burning calories; you’re fueling energy, clarity, and mental resilience. That’s how intuitive eating and campfire-style fueling come together to support thriving metabolism and authentic well-being.

Your body is intelligent. When you honor it with consistent fuel, you become more alive, more present, and more you.
